Building a Shopify store is one of the fastest ways to start selling online in Morocco. But what budget should you actually plan for? Between the monthly subscription, the theme, development and local integrations, the price varies widely — and most quotes Moroccan brands receive leave out at least one line item. Here is a complete breakdown.
1. The Shopify subscription
Shopify charges a monthly subscription, in dollars, covering the platform, hosting, the security certificate and updates. Plans start at around $29 per month and rise with your volume and the features you need.
For a brand starting out in Morocco, the basic plan is more than enough for the first few months. There is no reason to pay for a higher tier before volume justifies it: you can change at any time without rebuilding the store.
On top of that sit transaction fees, which depend on your payment gateway and your plan. This is a variable cost, proportional to sales, that belongs in your margin calculation from the start rather than as a surprise on the first statement.
2. The theme: free, premium or custom
Three options, with a wide price gap.
- Free theme: quick to set up, no cost, but limited in customisation and immediately recognisable. Fine for testing an offer, not enough for building a brand.
- Premium theme: a one-off cost of roughly $200 to $400, a more polished result, but shared with thousands of other stores. Well customised, this is the best value for most projects.
- Custom theme: designed around your brand and your conversion funnel. This is what makes the difference when the goal is to sell rather than simply exist — but it only pays off above a certain volume.
One piece of advice: do not pay for a custom theme before you have proven you can sell. Many brands invest in design what they should have invested in acquisition.
3. Development and local integrations
This is where the budget is really decided, and the line item that low-cost quotes stay quiet about. A store that converts in Morocco needs:
- Local payment: CMI, bank cards, and above all cash on delivery, still dominant in many categories.
- Delivery connected to Moroccan carriers, with automatic note generation and status tracking.
- WhatsApp for order confirmation, customer service and abandoned-cart recovery.
- A product page and checkout optimised for conversion.
- Compliant invoicing, with continuous numbering and usable accounting exports.
These require development and configuration. In practice, a serious store built on a customised premium theme starts around MAD 25,000, and a fully custom project around MAD 45,000, depending on catalogue size and integrations.
4. The special case of migration
If you are moving from an existing store — YouCan, WooCommerce or a custom build — the budget is different. Expect from MAD 35,000, because a migration adds two workstreams a new build does not have:
- data transfer (products, customers, order history),
- the 301 redirect plan, which protects the rankings you have already earned.
That second point justifies the price gap. A badly prepared migration costs months of organic traffic, which far exceeds any saving on the quote.
5. The hidden cost: maintenance
A store is not a one-off project. Plan a recurring budget for:
- theme and app updates,
- ongoing conversion optimisation,
- new features as you grow,
- paid third-party apps, usually billed monthly.
That last point deserves attention: it is easy to accumulate six apps at $20 a month without noticing. Over a year, that is more than the premium theme.
How to read a Shopify quote
Three questions to ask every time:
- Is cash on delivery included, with a confirmation step? Without confirmation it generates unfulfilled orders that cost you both the delivery and the return.
- Who owns the Shopify account? It must be in your name, not the agency's.
- Is training included? Your team should be able to add a product and process an order without calling anyone.
In summary
The price of a Shopify site in Morocco depends mostly on your ambition: a simple shopfront or a real selling machine. Expect from MAD 25,000 for a properly built store, MAD 45,000 for custom, and MAD 35,000 for a migration — plus the Shopify subscription and apps.
